Under the direction of the Mayor and Village Administrator, the Water Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and administration of the Village’s water treatment plant. This includes monitoring all treatment processes, operating chemical feed equipment, maintaining treatment facility components, performing laboratory testing, and ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulations. The Operator will also be responsible for obtaining the certifications required to become an Ohio EPA licensed plant operator.
Core Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain the water treatment plant in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
- Monitor the operation of filters, pumps, chemical feed systems, and treatment equipment, adjusting processes as necessary to meet daily demand, fire protection, and safe water standards.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret water samples to ensure water quality and compliance with Ohio EPA regulations.
- Maintain accurate reports, records, and logs for plant operations, chemical usage, and laboratory testing.
- Collaborate with the Water Distribution Coordinator, Superintendent, and other Village personnel on operational and maintenance activities.
- Supervise and schedule routine maintenance and repairs of equipment, including chemical feed systems and pumps.
- Facilitate proper sludge removal and disposal procedures.
- Ensure safe handling, storage, and usage of all chemicals, including bulk chemicals and chlorine cylinders.
- Perform laboratory testing using proper techniques to generate accurate and valid results.
- Maintain the cleanliness and order of the facility and grounds.
Operational Duties
- Read and interpret plant meters, gauges, charts, maps, and metering devices.
- Troubleshoot operational issues and implement corrective measures as needed.
- Monitor online analyzers to ensure operations remain within legal limits.
- Receive and process work orders, prioritize tasks, and schedule work promptly.
- Operate specialized equipment safely, including chemical feed systems, laboratory instruments, and Village-owned vehicles.
- Ensure proper marking of water lines and other assets in accordance with 811 and excavation protocols.
- Respond to emergencies and provide support for water-related incidents as directed by the Superintendent.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of local, state, and federal water treatment regulations and training requirements.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Education and Certifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Possession of a valid and insurable driver’s license.
- Ohio EPA laboratory certification (to be obtained as soon as possible).
- Class I Operator License within two years, Class II within five years, and Class III within seven years.
Physical Requirements
Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs, reach above shoulder height, lift up to 50 pounds, and move 150-pound cylinders.
Compensation
- Starting pay rate: $15.00 per hour.
- A $1.00 per hour increase is awarded for each license level achieved.
